Indigo Tie-Dye workshop in Hoi An, Vietnam

Experience an authentic Indigo tie-dye workshop in Hoi An, Vietnam. Learn from artist Le Thuy and create your own hand-dyed scarf in just 2 hours!

I found out about this workshop through @langthanginvietnam on Instagram, and it was the perfect way to spend an afternoon in Hoi An. Located just a 10-minute walk from the famous Old Town, this hands-on class takes you through the fascinating process of making indigo-dyed scarves, blending age-old techniques with modern-day creativity.

What Makes This Workshop Special?

One of the highlights of the workshop is that the artist follows the traditional method of fermenting Indigo leaves instead of using the more commercial indigo paste that’s common today. This fermentation process results in a richer, deeper indigo hue that truly stands out. It’s something that can’t be replicated with shortcuts.

The 2-hour class started with a brief introduction to the history of Indigo dyeing and a demonstration of various folding techniques to create beautiful patterns. From simple folds to more intricate designs, I was able to experiment and really make the scarf my own. Watching the vibrant blue hues emerge as the cloth soaked in the indigo solution was mesmerizing—each fold and knot adding a unique touch to the final design.

Hands-On Creativity

One of the best things about this workshop is how hands-on it is. You get to craft your own design from scratch, choosing how to fold and tie your scarf to create different patterns. The artist was incredibly patient, explaining the different steps and techniques with ease.

Whether you want to add a pop of color to your wardrobe or create a meaningful souvenir, the finished piece is something you’ll proudly wear or display at home. Plus, the whole process is super relaxing and creative—perfect for anyone looking to slow down and enjoy the artistic side of Hoi An.
